Spacecraft Press is proud to announce the publication of Gary Barwin’s NASA JPG: Earth View from the Top. A total of 30 copies were produced, 15 of which are for sale.
NASA JPG: Earth View from the Top is the complete code of a NASA .jpg image of Earth, set in a font which transforms its symbols and letters into an asemic script, invoking aspects of nonrepresentational narrative.
This asemic text has been arranged by the designer into a series of 32 sonnets, which parse the text into a mercurial series of poems describing a digital map of Earth as viewed from space. The ironically antiquated font and form of the piece contrast these alien snapshots of our planet, signaling the eventual obsolescence of the technologies used to capture and store them.
Gary Barwin is a writer, multimedia artist and musician. He is the author of several books, including Moon Baboon Canoe (Mansfield, 2014), and the forthcoming novel Yiddish for Pirates (Random House Canada, 2016). He is 2014-2015 Writer-in-Residence at Western University and lives in Hamilton, Ontario, and at garybarwin.com.
